How Old Is Your Hot Water Tank?
Before you book a repair or shop for a new tank, check the label. It tells you the tank's age, size and type in a minute.
Request a plumberFind the label
It's on the side of the tank, usually near the top or beside the access panel. A flashlight helps in a basement corner.
Read the date
Most makers code the manufacture date into the serial number. Search the brand name with "serial number date" to decode it.
Capacity
The label lists the size, often in both litres and US gallons. If the household keeps running out, a larger tank may help.
Fuel
Electric tanks list voltage and element wattage. Gas, propane and oil tanks list the input rating and fuel type.
What age means
Many tanks last around eight to twelve years. A tank in that range that rumbles, leaks or gives rusty water is worth planning to replace.
Next step
Send the label details with your request. See hot water tanks.
Rented or owned
Some New Brunswick homes rent their hot water tank. If yours is rented, the rental company may be responsible for repairs or replacement, so check your bills or agreement before booking work.
Look around it
Check the floor around the tank for water, the pipes on top for green or white crust, and the relief valve pipe for drips. Mention anything you find in your request.
Expansion tanks
Some homes have a small expansion tank near the hot water tank. It gives heated water room to expand so pressure doesn't strain the tank and fittings. Ask whether yours needs one when the tank is serviced or replaced.
