Private Well & Water Pressure Service near Moncton, NB

Outside the city water system, many homes around Moncton rely on a private well. A pump, a pressure tank and a switch keep the water flowing, and each can fail.

How the system works

The well pump fills a pressure tank, which keeps water under pressure so the pump doesn't start every time you open a tap. A pressure switch starts the pump when pressure drops and stops it when it reaches the set point.

Short cycling

If the pump clicks on and off every few seconds while water runs, the pressure tank has probably lost its air charge or its bladder has failed. That wears out the pump quickly, so it's worth fixing soon.

No water

Check the breaker for the pump first. If it's on and there's still no water, the switch, the pump or the wiring may have failed. In winter, a frozen line between the well and the house is another possibility.

Water quality

Cloudy water, sediment in the aerators or a change in taste or smell can point to a problem with the well or a filter. Have well water tested regularly, and tell the plumber about any change and when it started.

Freeze protection

The pressure tank and pipes near where the line enters the house need to stay above freezing. Insulate exposed pipe and seal drafts around the entry point, especially in an unheated crawl space.

Getting help

Tell the plumber what you hear, what the pressure gauge shows and whether the breaker has tripped. Send a request and a plumber will get in touch.

Power cuts

When storms knock out the power, the well pump stops and the house runs on whatever is left in the pressure tank. Keep some drinking water stored, and know how to restart the system once the power is back. A plumber can show you the switch and settings.

Frequently asked questions

Can a plumber repair my well pump?
Many service pressure tanks, switches and the piping in the house. Pulling a submersible pump from a drilled well may need a well contractor.
How often should well water be tested?
Regular testing is recommended for private wells. Ask your local public health office about testing options.
