Memramcook is a village in Westmorland County with 5,029 people in 2021, spread over about 187 square kilometres. Its population is mainly of Acadian descent, and many residents speak Chiac.

Orchards and the river

The village's orchards are a major employer, and the name comes from a Mi'kmaq word meaning "variegated", for the many twists of the Memramcook River. Rural properties with orchards and gardens often have yard hydrants and irrigation taps that need draining before the first hard frost.

Cradle of Acadia

Long home to the Mi'kmaq, Memramcook saw Acadians arrive in 1700, and it is known as the "Berceau de l'Acadie", the cradle of Acadia. The Collège Saint-Joseph opened in 1864 as the first francophone university in eastern Canada, and it hosted the first National Acadian Convention in 1881. A village with that much history has some very old houses, often renovated many times. Older homes may have original drains, stone or block foundations and pipes that run through cold corners.
