Shediac at a glance

Shediac is a town in Westmorland County, set mainly along Route 133 around Shediac Bay on the Northumberland Strait. Known as the "Lobster Capital of the World", it holds a lobster festival every July and greets visitors with a 90-ton lobster sculpture.

Running far in

Hundreds of years ago the Mi'kmaq encampment of Es-ed-ei-ik, meaning "running far in", was one of the major camps in southeast New Brunswick, named for where the coastline turns. Over time the name became Gédaique, then Shediac. Acadians arrived in 1751, and the town has expanded several times since, most recently in 2023 when it took in all or part of four local service districts.
