The Hub City
Moncton is New Brunswick's largest city, and in 2025 it became the first in the province to pass 100,000 people, with close to 200,000 across the metropolitan area. It sits on the Petitcodiac River at the centre of the Maritimes, and its long history as a railway hub earned it the name "Hub City". Fast growth means new subdivisions alongside homes that are a century old, each with very different plumbing. See renovations.
Cold winters, wet storms
Moncton has a humid continental climate with cold winters. Nor'easters can bring 20 to 30 centimetres of snow at a time, often mixed with rain or freezing rain, and the record low is −37.8 °C, set on February 5, 1948. Pipes in exterior walls, crawl spaces and unheated garages need protecting every year. Our winter guide covers the basics.
