Licensed plumbers

All plumbing system construction work in the province must be done by a provincially licensed plumber who is employed by a licensed plumbing contractor.

Plumber licences

A Plumber Licence requires a New Brunswick Certificate of Qualification in the plumbing trade. Ask to see it.

Contractor licences

A Plumbing Contractor Licence requires a plumber's licence, two years' experience as a journeyman and a contractor's exam.

Get it in writing

For anything beyond a small repair, ask for a written quote that lists the work, materials and any permit. Compare quotes by what's included, not only the total.

Red flags

Be careful with anyone who wants full payment before starting, can't show a licence or suggests skipping a permit to save money. A licensed plumber will be comfortable answering questions about licensing and inspection.

Keep the paperwork

Keep the invoice, permit and warranty papers with your home records, and note the brand and model of anything installed. If a problem shows up later, it makes help much faster.

Permits and inspections

Larger jobs, such as a new hot water tank, a renovation or a new drain line, may need a permit and an inspection. Ask the plumber who will arrange it and when the inspector will visit. A signed-off permit is useful proof of the work if you sell the house later.
